Cause of Death ICD-10 Codes and Descriptions

The underlying cause of death is the condition giving rise to the chain of events leading to death. Related causes of deaths are either complications and sequelae of the underlying cause; or are conditions or mechanisms that contribute to the cause of death. Due in part to the way death certificate information is collected and coded, the statistical death files often list the underlying cause of death a second time as the related cause of death. However, in these statistical tables, the related cause code is only counted if it does not equal the underlying cause of death code.

Because a decedent can have multiple related causes of death, related causes of death sub-categories do not sum to the total number of deaths determined by the underlying cause of death.

Causes of death are classified in accordance with the Tenth Revision of the International Classifications of Diseases (ICD-10), a coding structure developed by the World Health Organization. This revision has been used to classify deaths occurring on or after January 1, 1999. In order to classify these selected causes of death, the ICD-10 codes are grouped into broader categories indicated by the table below:
