About the data: This site presents hospitalizations by selected procedures for Michigan residents hospitalized in all short-stay hospitals (including Veterans Administration hospitals, but excluding military hospitals) in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin. These hospitalizations are from the Michigan Resident Inpatient files, 2007-2014, which accounted for approximately 1.25 million hospitalizations annually. Hospitalizations are inpatient hospital stays as measured by stays that were completed during the specified year. The number of hospitalizations are often greater than the number of persons hospitalized since some persons are hospitalized more than once during the year.
The procedure for each hospitalization was coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Annually, there were more than 2.3 million different procedures recorded for Michigan patients. These detailed procedures were grouped into 40 procedure groups which accounted for 61 percent of all procedures. These groups are selected for tabulations because of stated interest from staff in the public health field, are presented in the selected from 230 categories from HealthCare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), a Federal-State-Industry partnership sponsored by the Agency For Healthcare Research and Quality.
"Residual Categories": The 230 HCUP categories include many residual categories such as "Other diagnostic nervous system procedures" or "Other Therapeutic Endocrine Procedures". To be meaningful, such categories must be shown in a hierarchical order with their companion categories. For example, "Other diagnostic nervous system procedures" must be listed after six associate procedures, namely (1) Incision and excision of CNS"; (2) Insertion; replacement; removal of extracranial ventricular shunt"; (3) Laminectomy; excision intervertebral disc"; (4) Diagnostic spinal tap"; (5) Insertion of catheter or spinal stimulator and injection into spinal canal; (6) Descompression peripheral nerve". If procedures tables are not shown in hierarchical order (e.g. a table ordered by most common procedures), the residual category is listed out of context, without its companion categories. Whenever such groupings are encountered, it is suggested the reader consult the category grouping table for information regarding the precise ICD-9CM codes used to classify the category.
