In abortions where more than one procedure was performed, the principal procedure was determined according to the following hierachy: hysterectomy/hysterotomy, sharp curettage (D&C), saline injection or prostaglandin, dilation and evacuation, medical (non-surgical), suction curettage, and other procedures.
