$5.16 Million Dollars in Dental Health Grants Awarded
Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr., today announced
that $5.16 million in dental health funding for Medicaid beneficiaries has been awarded.
"These grants will improve access to quality dental care for Medicaid beneficiaries throughout
the state," said Governor Engler. "An additional 90,000 Medicaid beneficiaries will receive oral
health services thanks to this important funding."
"Access to dental services has been a concern for Medicaid beneficiaries and these grants will
improve access to quality dental care throughout the state," said Haveman. "It will serve a vital need
in communities to ensure access to quality dental care for Medicaid beneficiaries."
The Michigan Department of Community Health FY2000 budget included funding to increase
Medicaid dental capacity to help alleviate the dental access problems that Medicaid beneficiaries are
experiencing.
Grants were awarded to various entities, such as local public health departments, federally-qualified health centers (FQHC), hospitals, dental schools and private dental enterprises. The grants
will be used for developmental costs, infrastructure, and enhanced technology and are directly related
to expanding the capacity of providers to service more Medicaid beneficiaries. Grant recipients are
located across the state including the Upper and Lower Peninsulas in both urban and rural areas. They
include:
- Sterling Area Health Center FQHC will receive $44,933 to fund dental and office equipment to
outfit a new dental wing with four new dental treatment rooms. They expect to serve an additional
1,200 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries.
- Baldwin Family Health Center FQHC will receive $200,000 to renovate and add five dental
treatment rooms to the clinic in Baldwin and upgrade equipment and expand operation of the clinic
in Shelby. Additional staff will be hired for both locations. They expect to serve an additional
5,640 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Lake, Oceana, Newaygo, Mason, Osceloa and
Mecosta counties.
- Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency will receive $962,044 to expand service delivery
in five existing clinics with new equipment and additional dental treatment rooms and expand
access with four new clinics located throughout the region. They expect to serve an additional
13,080 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Benzie,
Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle and Wexford
counties
.
- Health Delivery, Inc. will receive $283,940. The FQHC will expand service delivery at existing
dental clinics with additional dental treatment rooms and equipment, expand operation hours and
hire additional staff. They expect to serve an additional 5,000 children and adult Medicaid
beneficiaries in Saginaw and Bay counties. They will also serve as a site for the University of
Michigan School of Dentistry to participate in community dental rotation.
- The Marquette County Health Department will receive $397,823 to expand service at existing
dental clinics with additional dental treatment rooms and equipment and hire additional staff. They
expect to serve an additional 5,080 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Marquette, Baraga,
Delta, Dickinson, Menominee and Schoolcraft counties. They will also serve as a site for the
University of Michigan School of Dentistry to participate in community dental rotation.
- Ingham County Health Department will receive $361,824 to develop two new dental health clinics.
The Ingham County Health Department expects to serve an additional 3,000 children and adult
Medicaid beneficiaries in Ingham county.
- Cherry Street Health Services FQHC will receive $460,576 to develop three new dental clinic sites
and expand an existing site with new equipment and dental treatment room. They expect to serve
an additional 9,612 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Kent county. They will also serve
as a site for the University of Michigan School of Dentistry to participate in community dental
rotation.
- Mid-Michigan District Health Department will receive $333,601 to develop a new dental health
clinic in an area with no previous public health dental clinic. They expect to serve an additional
1,750 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Montcalm county.
- Hamilton Family Health Centers FQHC will receive $176,421 to expand service delivery by
adding additional dental treatment rooms and hiring additional staff. They expect to serve an
additional 1,500 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Genesee county.
- Kalamazoo County Human Services Department will receive $106,328 to renovate an existing
dental clinic and add two new dental treatment rooms including an operating room suite. They
expect to serve an additional 3,500 children, adult and developmentally disabled Medicaid
beneficiaries in Kalamazoo county.
- Hackley Community Care Center FQHC will receive $571,869 to renovate an existing dental clinic
and add eight dental treatment rooms, develop a new clinic site with six dental treatment rooms
and hire additional staff. They have contracted with the Ottawa county mobile unit to provide
services at additional sites and expect to serve an additional 11,000 children and adult Medicaid
beneficiaries in Muskegon county. They will also serve as a site for the University of Michigan
School of Dentistry to participate in community dental rotation.
- U.P. Association of Rural Health Services will receive $345,500 to renovate existing dental clinics
and develop three new dental clinic sites. They expect to serve an additional 3,120 children and
adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Menominee, Iron, Mackinac, Delta, Dickinson, Schoolcraft and
Luce counties.
- InterCare Community Health Network FQHC will receive $181,470 to renovate an existing dental
clinic in Benton Harbor and add two additional dental treatment rooms. They will collaborate with
Holland Community Health Center to develop a new dental clinic with four dental treatment
rooms. They expect to serve an additional 7,700 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in
Berrien and Ottawa counties.
- Community Dental Center of Ann Arbor will receive $15,345 to purchase equipment so
beneficiaries can be seen for diagnostic, preventive, restorative, oral surgery and prosthodontics.
They expect to serve an additional 200 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries.
- Henry Ford Health System will receive $46,191 to purchase additional equipment for use in
operating room suites to treat developmentally challenged and special needs children. The
hospital-based pediatric dental clinic expects to serve an additional 1,500 child Medicaid
beneficiaries.
- Mobile Dentists will receive $151,894 to expand the use of the school based dental clinic at
Crockett Technical High School and purchase additional equipment for their mobile dental van
which provides services to Detroit schools. The private non-profit agency affiliated with the Henry
Ford Health System expects to serve an additional 4,200 Medicaid beneficiaries, primarily
children.
- Jackson Center for Family Health FQHC will receive $62,478 to expand service delivery by
renovating and expanding the existing dental clinic. The Jackson Center for Family Health expects
to serve an additional 2,385 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Jackson county.
- Family Health Center of Battle Creek FQHC will receive $145,120 to purchase additional
equipment and renovate existing dental treatment rooms. They expect to serve an additional 2,400
children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Calhoun county. They will also serve as a site for the
University of Michigan School of Dentistry to participate in community dental rotation.
- Van Buren/Cass County District Health Department will receive $138,442 to develop a new dental
clinic in Cass county. The Van Buren/Cass County District Health Department expects to serve an
additional 1,200 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Cass county.
- Children's Hospital of Michigan will receive $80,628 to expand service delivery in off-site
locations under the supervision and management of staff from Children's Hospital of Michigan/
Affiliated Pediatric Dental Service. They expect to serve an additional 1,000 Medicaid
beneficiaries, primarily children and special medical problems beneficiaries in Detroit.
- Wayne County Health Department will receive $7,355 to purchase computer equipment and link
satellite sites to main computer system for improved efficiencies in scheduling, billing and medical
records management.
- Detroit Community Health Connection FQHC will receive $90,022 to renovate an existing dental
clinic, purchase additional equipment and expand hours of operation. They will work
collaboratively with University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and expect to serve an
additional 1,200 children and adult Medicaid beneficiaries.
