Koopmans Appointed to Developmental Disabilities Executive Committee

Michigan Department of Community Health Director James K. Haveman, Jr. today congratulated Todd Koopmans on his appointment to the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council Executive Committee. Koopmans was appointed by council chairperson Karla L. Kirkland of Charlevoix.

"Todd has shown outstanding commitment to the goals and objectives of the Developmental Disabilities Council," said Kirkland. "He will continue to serve as a strong advocate for persons with developmental disabilities."

"The Developmental Disabilities Council is an outstanding resource for individuals and families," said Haveman. "Todd will be an excellent addition to the Council's executive committee." Koopmans also serves on the Health Plans Advisory Council located within the Department of Community Health.

Governor Engler appointed Koopmans, of Fremont, to the 21 member Developmental Disabilities Council in 1996. The executive committee consists of five members and meets on a regular basis to carry out polices established by the council.

The Developmental Disabilities Council, whose members are appointed by the governor, was established in 1976 by federal legislation. Each state and U.S. territory has a council. Basic objectives of the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council include: (1) distribution of federal funds to local agencies through a system of financial grant requirements to benefit persons with developmental disabilities; and (2) advocating for persons with developmental disabilities and their families.
