Youth Drug Prevention Programs To Apply for Funding

Governor John Engler today announced that drug and violence prevention programs targeting high-risk and out-of-school youth can apply for summer program funding. Funding is available under the federal Safe & Drug Free Schools & Communities Act of 1994.

Office of Drug Control Policy Director, Darnell Jackson, expects up to 11 summer projects to be awarded funding. Grants may range up to $50,000. Funds are available for drug and violence prevention projects targeting at-risk youth during the summer of 1997 (June 1-September 30, 1997).

"Across the state, there are important programs that are working with our young people, teaching them about the dangers of drugs. Through these grants, these outstanding programs will be able to reach out and protect more children in Michigan," said Engler.

Projects must utilize effective prevention strategies to prevent drug use and youth violence utilizing a zero-tolerance and "no-use"prevention message. Applicants may also provide other services such as educational services, tutoring, and job skills training. No equipment may be purchased with these funds.

Public and nonprofit private entities are eligible to apply. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Drug Control Policy OR via the Michigan Department of Community Health Web Page address: http://www.mdch.state.mi.us

Proposals must be received by the Office of Drug Control Policy by May 16, 1997. The awards are expected to be presented by May 23, 1997.
