Michigan Department of Community Health

Overview of the Administrative Structure
June 5, 1996

Introduction

This is a review of the new administrative structure of the Michigan Department of Community Health. We share this with you for your information as we work together to enhance and provide services to Michigan citizens.

The Michigan Department of Community Health is made up of components from three formerly separate agencies -- the Department of Mental Health, The Department of Public Health, and the Medical Services Administration, once part of the Family Independence Agency. On May 15 the new department added the Office of Drug Control Policy. The Department of Community Health consists of about 7350 employees with a budget of more than eight billion dollars.

Managing the transition of these institutions to a single department has been done through the creation of three Type I agencies under the umbrella of the Department of Community Health. This administrative structure enables the department to implement new ways of managing health care costs and services. It provides the foundation to meet future administrative opportunities.

The administrative structure outlined here builds on the past strength of each of the administrative components that make up the department. The director will continue to manage through a leadership team approach. Policy decisions will be made within the leadership team, with each lead administrator bearing some line responsibility for the administrative components of the department.

Below is a description of the administrative structure and an organizational chart that provides an overview of the administrative structure for the department.
