Engler Names Darnell Jackson Director of Michigan's Office of Drug Control Policy

Governor John Engler today announced the appointment of Darnell Jackson as director of Michigan's Office of Drug Control Policy.

"With his extensive background in drug prevention, law enforcement, drug testing, community policing and drug education, Darnell Jackson is ideally suited to lead Michigan's drug control policy," said Governor Engler. "Not only is his reputation one of being tough on dope dealers, he is also adept at educating communities and forming partnerships with them to take back their neighborhoods from drug-dealing predators."

Community Health Directory Jim Haveman added, "With Darnell Jackson's experience and commitment, Michigan is taking a giant step toward enforcing zero tolerance for illegal drugs. This appointment sends a clear message that Michigan is continuing its tough-on-drugs policy."

Jackson, of Saginaw, has served as Administrative Deputy Chief of Policy in the Saginaw Police Department, where he has been responsible for directing the daily operations of 12 sections of the police department, including its drug unit, community policing program, the Saginaw County Multi-Jurisdictional Gang Crime Task Force and the D.A.R.E. Program.

Jackson earned his bachelor's degree at Wayne State University in 1977 and his juris doctor degree from the Wayne State University Law School in 1981. Prior to his police work, Jackson served as Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Saginaw County. In addition, he served as a attorney-at-law with the Braun, Kendrick, Finkbeiner, et al. Law firm in Saginaw from 1989 to 1990. Jackson is a member of the Michigan Bar Association, the Saginaw County Bar Association, the Fraternal Order of Police and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Jackson's appointment is effective October 7.
